The South of Tasmania: to the southernmost point and Bruny Island
Heading south along the Huon River and the d’Entrecasteaux Channel, Southport is the southernmost gazetted township in Australia. Further south is Cockle Creek, with nearby Australia’s southernmost point. Across the d’Entrecasteaux Channel is Bruny Island, both named after the same French explorer (1792). However, to the Nuenonne Aboriginal people, it was always Lunawanna-Alannah; two localities on the island carry those names. On The Neck, separating North Bruny from South Bruny Island is Truganini Lookout, honouring the local woman who was one of the last surviving pure-blood Tasmanians; she died in 1876.
