Washington, DC, USA - The Bell X-1 “Glamorous Glennis” rocket plane with which Charles E. “Chuck” Yeager on 14 October 1947 first flew faster than the speed of sound at 1127 km/hour.

Washington, DC, USA - A Douglas D-558-2 Skyrocket, a rocket-powered research aircraft. On 20 November 1953 Scott Crossfield piloted it as a first to Mach 2, more than 2076 km/hour.

Pensacola, Florida, USA, 1980 - A Douglas F4D Skyray, the first carrier-launched aircraft to hold the world's absolute speed record, at 1212 km/hour, and a Douglas AD Skyraider attack aircraft, of late 1940s-early 1980s.

Pensacola, Florida, USA - A Douglas A4D (later A-4) Skyhawk, and behind it a North American FJ-4B Fury, a Douglas F4D Skyray and behind that a Douglas AD Skyraider, all carrier-capable aircraft.

Pensacola, Florida, USA - A Grumman FF-1 “Fifi” (G-5), an American biplane fighter aircraft operated by the United States Navy during the 1930s, the first carrier aircraft with retractable landing gear.

Pensacola, Florida, USA - A Martin P-5 Marlin, a twin-piston engined flying boat that served with the Navy from 1951 to the late 1960s; it was a successor to the PBM Mariner.

Pensacola, Florida, USA - A Lockheed WV2 (or Lockheed EC-121 Warning Star), a military version of the Lockheed L-1049 Super Constellation; it served between 1954 and 1978 as an airborne early warning system, with two large radomes.

Pensacola, Florida, USA - A Lockheed P2V Neptune (or P-2), a Maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare aircraft, one of the first in operational service to be fitted with both piston and jet engines.

Pensacola, Florida, USA - A North American (Rockwell) A-5 Vigilante, a carrier-based supersonic bomber. Its first flight was on 31 August 1958. On 13 December 1960 a world altitude record was established of 27,874 metres, at a speed of Mac 2.2.

Harlingen, Texas, USA - A Curtiss P-40 Warhawk, a fighter and ground-attack aircraft that first flew in 1938; it was used by most Allied powers during World War II, and remained in frontline service until the end of the war.

Harlingen, Texas, USA - A Lockheed P-38 Lightning, a World War II-era American piston-engined fighter aircraft; it had distinctive twin booms and a central nacelle containing the cockpit and armament.

Harlingen, Texas, USA - A Boeing B-47 Stratojet, a long range, strategic bomber designed to fly at high subsonic speed and at high altitude; introduced in 1951; its engines in nacelles under the swept wing was a major innovation in design.

Harlingen, Texas, USA - A Convair F-102 Delta Dagger, the USAF's first operational supersonic interceptor and delta-wing fighter. It entered service in 1956; its main purpose was to intercept invading Soviet strategic bomber fleets during the Cold War.

Harlingen, Texas, USA - A Northrop F-89 Scorpion, an interceptor built during the 1950s; a Douglas C-124 Globemaster II, (“Old Shaky”), a heavy-lift cargo aircraft; and a Boeing C-97 Stratofreighter, a long-range heavy military cargo aircraft.

Butaritari, Kiribati, 1988 - An 18-seat three-engined Britten-Norman Trislander of Air Tungaru on the airport of Butaritari atoll, in the north of Kiribati.

Ambon, Maluku, Indonesia, 1995 - A Fokker F-27 Friendship of Merpati Nusantara airlines on Pattimura International Airport.

Mer, Queensland, Australia, 2003 - A Britten-Norman BN-2 Islander of MDW Air (= Mer, Dawar, Waiar, the three islands in the Murray Islands group) with its flag design on the tail, on the airstrip of Mer or Murray island, eastern Torres Strait Islands.

Wanaka, South Island, New Zealand, 2011 - A De Havilland FB5 Vampire jet fighter in the New Zealand Fighter Pilots Museum. Developed in 1941, the Vampire was in operation between 1946-1966.

Gangneung, Gangwon, Korea, 2014 - A McDonnell F-4D Phantom II jet of the R.O.K. Air Force. It is a two-seat, twin-engine, all-weather, long-range supersonic jet interceptor and fighter-bomber with a top speed of over Mach 2.2. A total of 5,195 Phantoms were built from 1958 to 1981.

Gangneung, Gangwon, Korea, 2014 - A Northrop F-5A/B Freedom Fighter jet of the R.O.K. Air Force, a supersonic light fighter. It entered service in the early 1960s and over 800 were produced through 1972 for US allies.

Gangneung, Gangwon, Korea, 2014 - A Lockheed T-33A Shooting Star trainer of the R.O.K. Air Force. It was developed from the Lockheed P-80/F-80 jet fighter and made its first flight in 1948.

Gangneung, Gangwon, Korea, 2014 - A Cessna T-37C Tweet jet of the R.O.K. Air Force, a small, economical twin-engine jet trainer aircraft, made between 1957 and 1975.

Seoul, Korea, 2014 - A Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-19 with North Korean markings in the War Memorial Museum; a single-seat, twin jet-engined fighter plane and the first Soviet production aircraft capable of supersonic speeds in level flight.

Tokyo, Japan, 2014 - A Mitsubishi Type 0 (Zero) Model 52, displayed at the Yasukuni Shrine's museum. Model 11 was adopted for Navy use in 1940 and was the best carrier-based fighter in the world, with excellent manoeuvrability and long range.

Sofia, Bulgaria, 2015 - A Panavia Tornado GR 1B, a twin-engine, variable-sweep wing multirole combat aircraft, with German markings. It was produced from 1979–1998.

Sofia, Bulgaria, 2015 - A Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21, a Soviet built supersonic jet fighter aircraft, produced from 1959 to 1985; exported to about 60 countries over four continents, it is the most-produced supersonic jet aircraft in aviation history.

Sofia, Bulgaria, 2015 - A Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-23, a Soviet built variable-geometry fighter aircraft, produced from 1967–1985 with 5,047 built.

Sofia, Bulgaria, 2015 - A Mil Mi-24, a large helicopter gunship, attack helicopter and low-capacity troop transport with room for eight passengers. It is produced since 1972 and used by the Soviet Air Force and its successors, along with more than 30 other nations.

Sofia, Bulgaria, 2015 - A Sukhoi Su-17, a Soviet variable-sweep wing fighter-bomber. It was produced from 1969–1990 and was widely exported. It is the first variable-sweep wing of Russian/Soviet origin and set a number of world records.

Sofia, Bulgaria, 2015 - A Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-17, a high-subsonic fighter aircraft produced in the USSR from 1952, an advanced development of the MiG-15. Its first flight was in 1950.

Varna, Bulgaria, 2015 - A Kamov Ka-27 military helicopter with its co-axially mounted contra-rotating main rotors, in the National Maritime Museum (Naval Museum).

Chișinău, Moldova, 2015 - A Kamov Ka-26, a Soviet light utility helicopter with co-axial rotors, in the back garden of the National Museum of History. The Ka-26 entered production in 1969 and 816 have been built.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - The German Messerschmitt Me 262A Schwalbe (Swallow), the world's first operational turbojet aircraft. First flown under jet power on 18 July 1942, it proved much faster than conventional airplanes.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - The German Messerschmitt Me 163B Komet, a rocket-powered defensive fighter in World War II. Its range was limited by its high fuel consumption and the fuels sometimes exploded without warning, killing a number of pilots.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - A Douglas C-47D Skytrain transport plane, nicknamed ''Gooney Bird'', adapted from the Douglas DC-3. Above it is a Waco CG-4A Hadrian, the most widely used U.S. fabric-covered wood and metal troop/cargo glider of World War II.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - A Lockheed P-38L Lightning, originally conceived as an advanced, high-performance twin-engine interceptor. It became the standard USAAF fighter in the Pacific until the end of WWII.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - A Bell P-63E Kingcobra, developed from the P-39 Airacobra, which it closely resembles. Many P-63s were exported as lend-lease aircraft; the Soviet Union received 2,456 and Free French forces obtained 300.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - A Curtiss P-40E Warhawk, the United States' best fighter available in large numbers when World War II began. P-40s engaged Japanese aircraft at Pearl Harbor and in the Philippines in December 1941.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - A North American B-45C Tornado, the first American four-engine jet bomber and the first multi-jet reconnaissance aircraft to refuel in mid-air. Design began during World War II, and it made its first flight in 1947. It was used in the Korean War.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - A Republic F-84E Thunderjet, first flown in February 1946, it gained its greatest renown during the Korean War. It was initially sent to escort B-29s on missions over North Korea.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - A Lockheed F-94A Starfire, developed from the F-80 Shooting Star; it was the first American all-weather jet interceptor, with a large radar in the nose, and the first to have an afterburner. It is beside a North American B-45C Tornado bomber.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15bis of the North Korean Air Force, that was piloted by 21-year old Senior Lt. No Kum-Sok of the North Korean Air Force, who escaped with it on 21 September 1953 to South Korea.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - A North American F-82G Twin Mustang, the last propeller-driven fighter acquired by the USAF. It appears to be two P-51 Mustang fuselages on one wing, but it really was a totally new design, and among the first to operate over Korea.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - A Lockheed F-80C Shooting Star, the first American aircraft to exceed 500 mph in level flight, and the first USAF jet used in combat: a day fighter, fighter-bomber and photo reconnaissance aircraft during the Korean War.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - A Convair B-36J Peacemaker, a strategic intercontinental-range bomber designed during World War II. It has six piston- and four jet engines. Under its wing is a Lockheed F-94C Starfire, developed from the Lockheed F-80 Shooting Star.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - A North American F-86D Sabre, an all-weather interceptor, the air intake reshaped to make room for the enclosed radar. It was the first production single-seat fighter to which air-to-air missiles replaced the classic gun armament.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - A Boeing KC-97L Stratofreighter, the cargo version of the B-29, with a “flying boom” refuelling system, first flown in 1944. In front a Republic F-84F Thunderstreak, evolved from the straight-wing F-84; the prototype first flew in June 1950.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - A Convair B-58A Hustler, the U.S. Air Force's first operational supersonic bomber. It made its initial flight on 11 November 1956. The delta-wing machine set 19 world speed and altitude records.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - A Convair F-102A Delta Dagger, the world's first supersonic all-weather jet interceptor and the USAF's first operational delta-wing aircraft. Its initial flight was in 1953 and it became operational in 1956. Its maximum speed was 1300 km/hour.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - A Convair F-106A Delta Dart, an all-weather interceptor developed from the Convair F-102 Delta Dagger. It first flew in 1956, became operational in 1959 and production ended in late 1960.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - A McDonnell Douglas F-15A Eagle, a twin-engine, high-performance, all-weather air superiority fighter. First flown in 1972, it entered U.S. Air Force service in 1974. It has great acceleration, great power, light weight and manoeuvrability.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - A McDonnell Douglas F-4G Wild Weasel, a modified F-4E fighter with electronic warfare equipment, first flown in 1975 and retired in 1996.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - A Lockheed F-117A Nighthawk, the world's first operational stealth aircraft, impervious by enemy radar. The first F-117A flew on 18 June 1981.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - The Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit, a long-range bomber, merging high aerodynamic efficiency of a “flying wing” design with composite materials, special coatings and classified “stealth” technologies, making it virtually invisible to radar systems. It first flew in 1989 and became operational in 1993.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - A Lockheed SR-71A “Blackbird”, a long-range, advanced, strategic reconnaissance aircraft. Its first flight was in 1964 and in 1976; it set two world records for its class: a speed record of 3,530 km/h and an altitude record of 25,929 m.

Washington, DC, USA - The North American X-15 rocket-powered research aircraft became, after its initial test flights in 1959, the first winged aircraft to attain velocities up to Mach 6. It is flanked by the “Spirit of St. Louis”, a custom-built Ryan NYP flown by Charles Lindbergh on the first solo, nonstop flight from New York to Paris in 1927 and the Bell X-1, the first (rocket-powered) plane to break the sound barrier.

Washington, DC, USA - The 1903 Wright Flyer, the world's first successful airplane, after four years of developing and testing by Wilbur and Orville Wright beginning in 1899. It first flew at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, on 17 December 1903, making a 12-second flight, traveling 36 metres, with Orville piloting.

Washington, DC, USA - A Supermarine Spitfire, a British single-seat fighter aircraft, used by the Royal Air Force and many other Allied countries before, during and after World War II. The Mk VII, a pressurised fighter with a sliding cockpit canopy was built from 1942 until early 1944.

Washington, DC, USA - A Messerschmitt Bf 109, produced in huge quantities during the Nazi era. The first prototype flew in 1935, it first was used in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War and was still in service at the end of World War II in 1945.

Washington, DC, USA - A Mitsubishi A6M “Zero'”, a long-range fighter aircraft, operated by the Imperial Japanese Navy from 1940 to 1945. It was considered the most capable carrier-based fighter in the world, with excellent manoeuvrability and very long range.

Lelystad, Netherlands, 2016 - A Hawker Hunter, the first jet fighter of the Royal Dutch Air Force capable of supersonic flight; 445 were built by Fokker under licence and were used from 1956 until 1964.

Lelystad, Netherlands, 2016 - A Fokker Dr. 1, one of the best known fighter planes from the First World War. This triplane is best known for the successes that the “Red Baron” Manfred von Richthofen had in his dogfights, until he was shot down.

Lelystad, Netherlands, 2016 - A Sikorsky S-48 (or H-5), an American helicopter that was in use by the Royal Netherlands Air Force and was used for utility, rescue, and mercy missions throughout the world, including during the Korean war.

Lelystad, Netherlands, 2016 - A Saab 37 Viggen (“Thunderbolt”), a Swedish delta-winged, single-seat, single-engine, short-medium range combat aircraft, capable of Mach 2 top speed. Its first flight was in 1967 and 339 were built until 1990. It remained in use by the Swedish air force until 2005.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - The Douglas X-3 Stiletto, the only one built, designed to test sustained flight at twice the speed of sound, the use of very short wings and titanium airframe; it was underpowered and had a maximum speed of only 1,046 km/hour. Its first test flight was in 1952. Behind it is a McDonnell XF-85 Goblin, intended to deploy from the bomb bay of the Convair B-36 bomber as a parasite fighter.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - The Convair XF-92A, the world's first jet aircraft with the radical delta-wing configuration, the only one built. It was tested from 1948 until its nose gear collapsed on landing in October 1953. The knowledge learned led to the delta-wing F-102, the U.S. Air Force’s first operational supersonic interceptor.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - The Bell X-5, the world's first high-performance airplane to vary the sweepback of its wings in flight, investigating if this was feasible. Two X-5s were built, the first flight was in June 1951. One of the X-5s was destroyed in 1953, when it failed to recover from a spin at 60 degrees sweepback.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - The British-built Hawker Siddeley XV-6A Kestrel, a prototype Vertical/Short TakeOff and Landing (VSTOL) aircraft successfully tested in the 1960s. An improved version, known as the Harrier, became the world's first operational VSTOL fighter when it entered Royal Air Force (RAF) service in 1969.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - The Boeing VC-137C SAM 26000, a highly modified civilian Boeing 707-320B airliner, the first jet aircraft built specifically for use by the President of the United States. During its 36 year flying career from 1962, “Air Force One” carried eight sitting presidents, countless heads of state and other dignitaries.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - The North American XB-70A Valkyrie, originally conceived in the 1950s as a high-altitude, nuclear strike bomber that could fly at Mach 3. In 1961, the program was canceled, but the USAF bought two XB-70As to test aerodynamics, propulsion, etc; it achieved Mach 3 in October 1965. In front is the North American X-15A-2 and Martin X-24A and Martin X-24B (to study flight characteristics and manoeuvrability of “lifting bodies”), a Gemini Spacecraft and the Apollo 15 Command Module.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - A McDonnell Douglas RF-4C Phantom II, a tactical reconnaissance aircraft, a modified F-4C fighter; it can carry a variety of cameras in its nose section. Its initial flight was in 1964.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - The Northrop F-89J Scorpion, an all-weather fighter-interceptor; it had a radar operator in the rear seat guiding the pilot. It made its initial flight in August 1948 and deliveries to the Air Force began in July 1950.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - The North American F-86A Sabre, the USAF's first swept-wing jet fighter; its initial flight was in 1947 and in 1948 it set a new world speed record of 1,080 km/hour. It entered service in 1949 and served in the Korean War (1950–1953) as the primary opponent of the Russian-built MiG-15.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress flew in every combat zone during World War II, but its most significant service was over Europe. Its design emphasised high altitude flight, speed, and heavy defensive armament in order to survive enemy defences.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - The Supermarine Spitfire Mk. Vc, a modified Mk. II with a Rolls-Royce Merlin 45 engine, arriving at combat units in March 1941; a total of 6,464 were built. Overhead is a fabric-covered wood-and-metal Waco CG-4A Hadrian, the most widely used U.S. troop/cargo glider of World War II. it could carry 13 troops or a jeep, a quarter-ton truck or a 75mm howitzer.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - The North American P-51D Mustang, among the best and most well-known fighters from World War II with excellent range and manoeuvrability. It served in nearly every combat zone during WWII, and later in the Korean War. The P-51D had several improvements, including a new “bubble-top” canopy that greatly improved the pilot's vision. Nearly 8,000 were built.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - The Lockheed P-38L Lightning, an advanced, high-performance interceptor that performed many different missions during World War II. It was the only fighter with the range to escort bombers into Germany. It became the standard USAAF fighter in the Pacific theatre and in 1942 its pilots shot down the plane carrying Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, planner of the Pearl Harbor raid, the Imperial Japanese Navy commander.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - The Boeing B-29 Superfortress “Bockscar” that dropped the Fat Man atomic bomb on Nagasaki on 9 August 1945, three days after Hiroshima. Designed in 1940 as an eventual replacement for the B-17 and B-24, the first B-29 made its maiden flight on 21 September 1942.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - The Yokosuka MXY7-K1 Ohka, designed to teach less experienced pilots to fly the Model 11 “Ohka” (Cherry Blossom) kamikaze suicide rocket bomb. It was carried to the target under a G4M “Betty” bomber, detach, ignite the rocket motor, and dive into a ship. This trainer version had a landing skid and flaps with water ballast, expelled before landing at 210 km/hour!

Dayton, Ohio, USA - The Douglas A-1E Skyraider, designed during World War II for the U.S. Navy, played an important part in the Southeast Asia War. Overhead is a General Atomics Aeronautical Systems YMQ-9 Reaper, a long-endurance remotely piloted aircraft (RPA), to locate and destroy time-critical and highly mobile targets.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - The North American F-100F Super Sabre, a two-seat training version to train new Super Sabre pilots. The single-seat, supersonic F-100 fighter entered service in 1954.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - The Soviet Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-17F replaced the famous MiG-15 of the Korean War, with more sharply swept wings, longer fuselage, afterburner, better speed and handling. Production began in late 1951. This one represents a North Vietnamese Air Force (VPAF) MiG-17. They also flew Chinese-built MiG-17s (called J-5s).

Dayton, Ohio, USA - A Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21PF; this Soviet-made aircraft first flew in 1955, and more than 50 countries have used various versions. The USSR built more than 10,000 MiG-21s before ending production in 1985. This one is painted to represent a plane from North Vietnam's elite 921st Fighter Regiment.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - The Lockheed F-104C Starfighter, a supersonic superiority fighter; development of the F-104 began in 1952, and the first XF-104 made its initial flight in 1954. In 1958 an F-104A set a world speed record of 2260 km/hour and in 1959 an F-104C a world altitude record of 3,155 metres.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - A rocket-powered North American X-15 A-2 Hypersonic Research Aircraft, to subject pilots to conditions future astronauts would face: it made the first manned flights to the edges of space and was the world's first piloted aircraft to reach hypersonic speeds, more than five times the speed of sound. It was launched in midair from a B-52 “mothership” at about 1400 metres. Once its powerful rocket ignited, the X-15 streaked upward to the limits of the atmosphere, then glided unpowered to land on a dry lake bed. Typical flights lasted about 10 minutes. This aircraft, the second of the three X-15s, was modified, adding the large orange and white propellant tanks and lengthening the fuselage about 0.46 metres. It was the fastest X-15, reaching Mach 6.7 (7,274 km/hour) in October 1976.

Dayton, Ohio, USA - The Bell X-1B, designed to investigate supersonic flight problems. It was tested between 1954 and 1958, carried under a “mother” airplane, released between 7,600-10,700 metres; the rocket engine fired under full throttle for less than five minutes. After all fuel (alcohol-water mixture) and liquid oxygen was consumed, the pilot glided the airplane to earth for a landing.

Longreach, Queensland, Australia, 2020 - A Boeing 747 “Jumbo Jet”and a Lockheed Super Constellation at the Qantas Founders Museum, at Longreach Airport.

Caloundra, Queensland, Australia, 2021 - A Gloster Meteor F Mk.8, a CAC CA-27 Sabre, an Australian licence-built North American F-86 Sabre and a GAF Mirage IIIO(FA) A3-16, an Australian licence-built Dassault Mirage III, with overhead, a GAF Jindivik, a radio-controlled target drone; at the Queensland Air Museum.

Caloundra, Queensland, Australia, 2021 - A Fairey Gannet AS Mk.1 XA331, a British carrier-borne aircraft of the post-Second World War era with a crew of three; it has a double turboprop engine driving two contra-rotating propellers and a distinctive double folding wing; at the Queensland Air Museum.

Caloundra, Queensland, Australia, 2021 - A De Havilland DH.110 Sea Vixen F.A.W. Mk.2 XJ490, a British twin-engine, twin boom-tailed, two-seat, carrier-based fleet air-defence fighter flown by the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm during the 1950s through to the early 1970s; at the Queensland Air Museum.
