Guwahati, capital of Assam and Silchar, in the south

Guwahati, the vibrant capital of Assam, rests on the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra River and is one of India’s oldest continuously inhabited cities. Known in ancient times as Pragjyotishpura, it was the legendary capital of King Narakasura, mentioned in the Mahabharata. Later, as the centre of the Kamarupa Kingdom (4th–12th centuries CE), it flourished as a seat of power, trade, and devotion.
Dominating its spiritual landscape is the Kamakhya Temple, perched atop Nilachal Hill. Dedicated to the Goddess Shakti, it is one of India’s most revered pilgrimage sites, celebrating the power of creation and fertility. The temple’s origins date back to at least the 8th century, although the Ahom kings rebuilt it in the 17th century after it was destroyed by invaders. Through centuries, Guwahati thrived as a river port and cultural hub. Today, it remains the heart of Assam—where the ancient sanctity of Kamakhya meets the flowing life of the Brahmaputra and the rhythm of modern urban growth.
In the far south of Assam lies Silchar, the cultural and commercial hub of southern Assam’s Barak Valley, situated along the Barak River and surrounded by lush hills and tea gardens.
