This portrait gallery shows happy Aboriginal youngsters from the northern part of the Northern Territory, but excluding the Top End. The kids depicted here are mostly from Borroloola, a small town just south of the Gulf of Carpentaria and Barunga, an Aboriginal community about 80 kilometres from Katherine on the road to Beswick and southern Arnhem Land.
The people of Borroloola are Yanyuwa, people of the sea, with their centre actually in the Sir Edward Pellew Islands in the Gulf; and Garawa, who are from the mainland to the east of the town. Barunga is on land of the Jawoyn people, whose territory includes Katherine Gorge. There are also other peoples here, who have connections with southern Arnhem Land.
