EUROPE

Europe, including the European Russia, is the second smallest continent with an area of approx. 9 902 470 sq km. However, strictly speaking Europe is part of the Eurasian landmass and therefore not a "real" continent in its own right.

Historically the Ural and Caucasus mountains in Russia are considered the eastern land border of Europe with Asia. The boundary also cuts through the Caspian and Black Sea and the Bosporus, making Turkey only for a small part a European country. The Barents Sea, Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea define the northern, western and southern boundary.

Because of its many peninsulas, bays, islands, and fjords Europe has a very irregular coastline, around 80 000 km long. Because of this western Europeans have always been great seafarers, explorers and colonisers of distant lands.

Europe can be divided into two major areas: western peninsular Europe and eastern continental Europe; each is characterized by its differing landforms, peoples and history. Europe is one of the most densely populated and urbanized regions of the world, with the majority of its people living in cities, towns or villages.

Europe has had great importance in the world affairs: many world social movements, economic systems, and political ideas have begun in Europe. Colonisation spread Europe's ideas, people, religions and languages all over the world. However, the 20th century has seen a general decline of Europe in an economic sense, especially after the Second World War when colonies were lost and an "iron curtain" divided western Europe from a communist-dominated east. The collapse of the Soviet Union has led to a dramatically altered political landscape in the 1990s and a disastrous war following the breakup of Yugoslavia.
