Photos from Our World FRIESLAND |
Western Fryslân
Western Fryslân is a land of wide vistas, meadows criscrossed by small canals draining the surplus water and larger ones that double as convenient roads for the many boating enthusiasts that live here or come as visitors. There are quiet and picturesque villages and old churches, some on top of "terpen", the artificial hills dating from the middle ages, when the Frisians constructed these to escape to when the land was flooded during storms; this was before dikes were constructed.
These photos were taken mostly around the country and towns near the highway linking Fryslân's port city of Harlingen with the capital Leeuwarden, passing the old University city of Franeker and the small towns of Dronrijp and Deinum.
As in all of Friesland, this regions is ideally explored by bicycle (provided the weather holds up), as the pace of living is relaxed and there are very picturesque country roads and cycle paths across meadows and along canals, providing shortcuts to the villages and hamlets, quiet and peaceful. And the distances are small: Harlingen to Leeuwarden is only 25 km.
