A Swiss Guard stands guard at one of the gates into the inner sanctum of Vatican City. This dates back to the late 1400's when a group of 250 Swiss were picked to guard the pope. A treaty between the pope and two Swiss cantons guaranteed the pope a Swiss bodyguard for ever. Over the years their number has been reduced and their type of service has changed. They however still wear their medieval uniforms.
