PreviousAncient Rome, the first Superpower
Originally known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, construction of the Colusseum was started during the reign of Emperor Vespasian in 72 AD and completed by his son Titus. It could seat 50 000 and was the scene of bloody gladiator fights and shows with wild animals. Much of it was later removed as a source for marble.
