The statue of Ali Pashë Tepelena, also known as "The Lion of Yannina", the ruler (pasha) of the western part of Rumelia, the Ottoman Empire's European territory. He was a tyrannical ruler, based in Ioannina (now in Greece) but was born near the town of Tepelena, 30 km north of Gjirokastra.
