Children of Afghanistan

Like in every other country in the world, in Afghanistan the children are its future. Life has always been hard and most people live in poverty. As a result children are resilient and are expected to contribute to the family at an early age.

In this strict Muslim country girls are usually confined to the house, so it is mainly boys you see on the streets. They work and play, and always seem cheerful, friendly and courteous to strangers.

Many young children have to work and they may put in long hours in often tough conditions. But there is no doubt they are loved and valued like everywhere else and it is clear the boys grow up to be tough men. These photos were taken in 1973, so all of these boys would be adult men now; what has become of them? Will there be mujahedeen fighters among them or refugees? And what about the girls?
