Northern Hhohho District in far North Swaziland
Hhohho District is the northernmost region in Swaziland reached by a road that follows the border with South Africa from Mbabane to Piggs Peak, the main town in the region. It is a scenic road through a mountainous area, with farms and crossing the Komati river before entering the small town of Piggs Peak. A side road leads west to the town of Bulembu (formerly Emlembe), the site of the Havelock Asbestos Mine from where the ore was transported by cable car to Barberton, across the border in South Africa.
A few km to the south east of Piggs Peak is the small homestead of Nsangweni with close by a gallery of Bushman paintings depicting mainly hunting scenes. These date from well over a century ago when the country was inhabited by San (Bushmen) people that were subsequently displaced by the Nguni people that included the ancestors of today's Swazi. There are quite a few of these sites in Swaziland. Nsangweni overlooks the valley of the Komati river.
To the north and east of Piggs Peak are again small farms and homesteads and in the far northern corner of the country is the Lomati river, a quiet stream where boys, looking after their father's cattle, may take a break and go for a swim.
