Children of Ethiopia

The children of Ethiopia are, of course, no different to children in other parts of the world. They laugh, play and ham it up for the camera as everywhere else. They are loved by their parents and are the hope of the nation.

But life can be harsh; there is poverty and many children grow up knowing what it is to be hungry. Ethiopia has suffered devastating famines, especially during the mid-eighties when a civil war hampered relief efforts. Children especially suffered greatly. And, to make ends meet, many have to work, on the farm or, in the city, they may have to shine shoes.

Yet, in spite of hardship, those tough kids always preserve their joy of living as these photos amply demonstrate.
